Symantec Endpoint Protection is installed to every Agency workstation and server to defend against attack.

IT's first line of proactive protection is an "informed" employee who can identify and avoid high-risk web environments and attachments.  It all starts with the employment of one's common sense.

When opening email or surfing the web never click on unexpected email attachments and avoid downloading free software applications to include unfamiliar anti-virus applications.

Learn to identify a bogus virus and/or operating system alert window from an authentic virus and/or operating system alert window.

Acquiring simple techniques to avoid such pitfalls will enhance the integrity of the  existing computer security system.  Please take time to read some of the articles provided in the Agency knowledge-base located below.  Your professional and personal computing environments will benefit.

Copyright Law

Employees of Northwest Passage are bound by company policy and United States copyright laws to observe rulings protecting works holding copyright licenses.  It is the obligation and responsibility of each Northwest Passage employee to ensure copyright laws are adhered to when non-agency works are selected for replication.

Copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States (title 17, U. S. Code) to the authors of “original works of authorship,” including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works.  This protection is available to both published and unpublished works. Section 106 of the 1976 Copyright Act generally gives the owner of copyright the exclusive right to do and to authorize others to do the following:

  • To reproduce the work in copies or phonorecords;
  • To prepare derivative works based upon the work;
  • To distribute copies or phonorecords of the work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership, or by rental, lease, or lending;
  • To perform the work publicly, in the case of literary, musical, dramatic, and choreographic works, pantomimes, and motion pictures and other audiovisual works; To display the work publicly, in the case of literary, musical, dramatic, and choreographic works, pantomimes, and pictorial, graphic, or sculptural works, including the individual images of a motion picture or other audiovisual work; and
  • In the case of sound recordings, to perform the work publicly by means of a digital audio transmission.

In addition, certain authors of works of visual art have the rights of attribution and integrity as described in section 106A of the 1976 Copyright Act.

It is illegal for anyone to violate any of the rights provided by the copyright law to the owner of copyright. These rights, however, are not unlimited in scope.  For more information about copyright law please click the ...more link.

Software Piracy

Software piracy is a serious matter.  Besides violating the law and the intellectual rights of software authors, counterfeit software can seriously damage your PC and compromise its security.

Respecting intellectual property rights laws benefits everyone.  It strengthens economies, creates job opportunities, protects honest workers from losing their jobs to criminals, stimulates technological progress, and gives customers the genuine software experience they deserve while protecting them from becoming victims.

This issue has become so serious that organizations like Business Software Alliance (BSA) and Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), two leaders in software protection, are now offering substantial rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of software pirates.

Pirated software is usually procured through the sharing of legally purchased software or via counterfeit software purchased on bogus web sites or classified ads.  The counterfeit may be a good copy of the original, but it's more likely to be defective and dangerous.

It is important to understand the real risks associated with software piracy.  By using counterfeit, unlicensed or pirated software you are putting yourself and the Agency at risk.
